Measurement tools used in machine shops, such as micrometres, sine bars, callipers, and dial indicators, are calibrated using gauge blocks as a reference. The primary method of length standardisation employed by industry is gauge blocks. Sets of blocks with various standard lengths are available as gauge blocks. The fact that gauge blocks can be connected with relatively little dimensional uncertainty is a special feature. The blocks' ultra-flat surfaces adhere to one another through a sliding procedure known as wringing. Accurate lengths within a large range can be made using a few gauge blocks.
